Message from the Chairman of the Board of Trustees,
Thank you for visiting the Joongmin Foundation website. Under the authorization of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea, the Foundation was launched in the beginning of 2012 with the goals of spreading the ‘Joongmin’ awareness and working towards social development.
‘Joongmin’ (中民) refers to those who by the traditional definitions are considered as being part of the ‘middle class’ as a result of rapid economic development, yet maintain a healthy sense of nationalism which is geared towards improving the very society we live in rather than merely settling to existing structures and seeking power over others.
During the 1980s in Korea, the oppression of democracy caused polarization in society and the consequences of such are still evident in the status quo of Korean society. The middle class, then, can seek to encourage the active participation of civil society through horizontal channels of communication and promote the welfare of the weak or the minority in order to lead our society into more fruitful developments for the 21st century.
The Joongmin Foundation aims to help the realization of such goals by advancing social theory and contributing to social research. We hope you will support our endeavors.
